Soap
Today, we investigated why soap is effective against helping reduce the spread of Coronavirus. Viruses have a protective coating which is made of a fatty substance called lipid. Soap breaks down this layer and as a result the virus is destroyed. We modelled this using cooking oil and pepper in a tray of water. We washed our hands using soap then put a finger into the oil. The oil was repelled by the soap and dispersed. This shows how effective soap is against fats. After a few tries, the whole layer of oil had broken down due to the presence of soap in the tray. Hopefully this lesson reminded us why it is so important to wash hands regularly and properly at the moment. We also learnt about how the virus is transmitted and how it reproduces when it is inside a person. Great timing for a topic on micro-organisms.
