Short Stories
Be inspired to write something...
It is so nice to read stories, meeting people and things we would usually never meet even if we lived forever. It is even better to write stories which may be sitting in the back of your head, bringing to life that lovely flower that talks, cuddly animal that hates being cuddled or feet that can help you run a mile in two minutes.

Even better is to see writing published - and here is the chance to do something that will mean your short story is read by lots of other people. Who knows, you may even become as famous as J. K. Rowling.

How best to submit your story? Using a word processing programme such as Word, write your story (maximum 500 words). Spell check and make sure the punctuation and grammar are as good as you can get it. Save your story! Then copy and paste into the correct field below. Complete the other fields and press the submit button. We will check the story to make sure it is suitable for publication on this web site and then publish - typically this takes 24 to 48 hours. When your work is published tell all your friends about it!

Send us your short story for publication on this page.

Tia R - Year 1

Robin red breast was always a joy to be around. He was pleasant, brave and even a bit delightful. Robins best friend is dog. He dresses smart with dicky bows on, which makes him a little bit handsome and charming. But then they heard on the news that a very naughty and unpleasant panda was in town. He was very revolting because he slurped his spaghetti up and it gets all stuck in his fur.

Robin didn't like the the sound of slurpy spaghetti, so didn't really like panda much at all.

The next day, robin was making his nest, but then she saw a very large, black and white panda with some spaghetti. Then he walked towards the robin and robin shouted "oh no, it's the bad panda, help, dog where are you?" Dog heard robin, he thought that robin was playing a game but he wanted to go and check. So off dog trotted. Dog knew that robin was making his nest, he knew where it was, off he went to that place. When he arrived, he shouted "oh no it's you big panda". Dog had to do something but what?

Dog had an idea. He should make the robin and panda like each other by mixing a potion. He starts to gather foods and materials. Dog picks up noodles and marshmallows amongst other things.

Robin and panda come running over to where dog is collecting his potion ingredients. Dog said "in a minute, I'm not finished cooking the other foods for the tea party yet".

"A tea party" said panda. "Yes" said dog. "Sit down with robin and it will be along soon".

When the food was ready, dog served it out. Robin and panda ate it all up. Panda got noodles stuck in his fur and robin got marshmallow stuck in his beak. Robin said "oopsy I have some marshmallow stuck in my beak". Panda replied "oh dear I've got spaghetti stuck in my fur". They both laughed and from that day, they became friends.

What a lovely story Tia. It was such a good idea to create a potion so they became friends. Your descriptions of the characters are fantastic again, I can really imagine what they are like. You'll soon be able to make a little book of short stories! Well done.

Tia R - Year 1

In the middle of the garden, buzzed a hover fly, named Buzzy. Buzzy is an outspoken little hover fly. All the other bugs panic when they see Buzzy. He is scary and Makes them shudder. He is much larger than the other hover flys.

Cory and me went off into a forest, hoping when we came back to the garden, that Buzzy wasn't there. In the forest, there was all types of creatures, Wolves, bears and foxes. Gloomy Caves were all around us. We venture towards one of the caves. It is very dark and bats fly past our noses at high speed. Cory and I were very frightened. Suddenly, there is a loud noise. It sounded like a growling noise. We listened. Out of the corner of my eye, I see rocks falling. We were trapped in the cave. We had to find a way to get out.

But when we looked up, there was a tiny little light, it was sunlight. It was nearly noon. The sunlight disappeared for a moment, it was Buzzy flying through the hole. He had come to our rescue. We followed Buzzy high up towards the crack in the cave. Buzzy showed us the way out. Finally, we were safe and we went back to the garden before supper. Buzzy you really are a superstar.

What an amazing adventure, I was worried they wouldn't escape from the cave but luckily Buzzy came to the rescue, a surprising hero! Your descriptions of the characters and setting are brilliant Tia, well done.

Ben
I like this story because I like it when Buzzy saves you at the end. Buzzy is a good name for a fly because he buzzes.

Once upon a time there was a little lion called Sammy and her Dad was called Sam and her Mum was called Alexia. They lived in Africa, it is very hot in Africa. The lion's were thirsty but there was a problem. The watering the watering hole had all dried up.

So they went on a big journey to the North Pole where it was very cold. They saw some water and had a big drink. They saw some polar bears. The lion's were cold and the polar bear helped them to stay warm by giving them a cuddle.

They decided to live in the North Pole. They learnt to swim in the freezing cold water but the little lion had to stay in the shallow water, so she wouldn't sink. They learnt to catch fish for their breakfast, lunch & dinner.

They missed their friends in Africa and the little one Sammy missed her Granny & Grandpa. They sent postcards & letters back to Africa and told everyone how much fun they were having in the North Pole.

Sam & Alexia were going to have another baby he was called Joe. Sammy looked after him. At bedtime she sang him a song.

"Sleep little lion, don't you cry
As Mummy, Daddy & Sister is here
Sleep little lion, don't you cry
Everyone is looking after you
Sleep little lion, don't you cry
You'll have some pie in the morning"

In the morning they had fish pie for breakfast, it was yummy. Baby Joe got cold so Mummy, Daddy & Sister helped keep him warm. They loved living in the North Pole, it was fun.

Mrs Prior
Wow, Dorothy your story is lovely to read. The family had to get used to living in another place but they worked together to make it fun. Sammy was a caring and helpful big sister just like you Dorothy. Your song is great too, perhaps you could ask mummy to record you singing it and send it in to my challenge page.

What a great adventure Ted had! He packed a very sensible kit of equipment to take with him and I love your description of the mountain, it made me feel very cold just reading it. I wonder what other adventures Ted will have, will he meet someone?

The Polar Bear and the Penguins

Once upon a time there was a polar bear and he was walking on the ice. Then the ice collapsed and he fell in the water. The polar bear felt scared. Then a shark came closer and tried to pull him deeper into the water. Then twelve penguins pulled him out of the water and then they had a party. They all felt happy. For main course they had fish and for pudding they had ice cones in the polar bears house. Then they had a bath made out of ice and they went to their beds made out of ice. At night they had a midnight feast with milk and a little biscuit.

Short story review
Mrs Prior
Super story Ben, what a horrible baddie that shark was! I would like to hear about his adventures too. Thank goodness the polar bear had some friendly penguins to save him and what a great party they had to celebrate. Well done.

Ms Seccull
What a great story Ben! It made me feel cold even in this sunny weather we're having! I would have been very scared like the polar bear if I'd fallen into the water and found myself facing a shark! I'm not sure I would like a bed made of ice though!

Tia R
I liked the characters and I like it when the twelve penguins came to the rescue. I really love your story.

Short story review
Mrs Prior
Well done Arthur, what a super story about a family of bananas. I'm so relieved they could find some medicine to make Daddy Banana feel better. I think he might have eaten too many meals in the café, I wonder what meals your banana family ate?

Ms Seccull
What an original story Arthur! I don't think that I've ever read a story about a family of bananas. I think I feel bit like Daddy Banana after all the Easter eggs I've been eating...
