Book Week inspired drama and art work
Rowan enjoyed learning about the true story of Sadako Sasaki and the Thousand Paper Cranes through a drama workshop led by West End Musicals in Schools. They warmed up with some drama games and then explored key events of the story through freeze frames and a soundscape, working in pairs and groups.
Following the workshop, the children painted cherry blossom trees to create a book mark for their summer holiday reading. The cherry blossom is synonymous with Japan, home of Sadako. It was also a key feature of the fabric chosen for a special kimono that was made for her while she was ill. On the reverse of the bookmark, the children, in their best cursive handwriting, copied a poem Sadako wrote about remembering to be grateful for all that we have.
Rowan also enjoyed making koinobori, carp streamers, traditionally flown in Japan to celebrate Children's Day each May. |
